gsSCENE and Substitutes for Santa

Nov 5, 2010

Substitutes for Santa used to be a program under SOS Caring for Kids. After budget cuts, the program was deleted from SOS Caring for Kids. A gsSCENE member, Deanne Johnson, decided to personally take over Substitutes for Santa by doing all the fundraising, organizing and management of the event. Deanne has been overseeing Substitutes for Santa on her own for four years.

This year gsSCENE has partnered with Substitutes for Santa to help make the event bigger and better than ever! Substitutes for Santa provides a Christmas experience of a shopping spree, dinner and playtime for needy or underprivileged Horry County children. This year over 100 children in need from Loris and Myrtle Beach communities will receive a Christmas night to remember.

On December 14, 2010, the evening begins at Ultimate California Pizza Game Zone where each child will be paired up with a volunteer. Together they will enjoy a free pizza buffet and game time using a free game card provided to each child. The next stop is Christmas shopping at the Walmart near the Tanger Outlets. Volunteers will accompany their children on motor coaches over to Walmart where they will assist children in picking out toys and necessities using a Walmart gift card that will be provided to them.

Thanks to a donation of $3,000 from funds raised at gsSCENE’s Kickin’ it for Charity Kickball Tournament and gsSCENE’s Community Service Committee taking on Substitutes for Santa as a special project, this event can happen.

gsSCENE will be looking for volunteers to set up, take kids shopping, oversee dinner and everything in between. You can find out more about Substitutes for Santa by visiting www.gsSCENE.com.
