Parting Remarks from Shannon Camp
Jul 7, 2010
It is hard to believe that my year as gsSCENE Chair is coming to an end. What an exciting year we have had! We hosted 6 socials, 5 educational events, 6 Morning Rush events, 4 community service projects, the gsSCENE Annual Oyster Roast, our 3rd Anniversary Party and Kickin’ It for Charity. That in itself is a busy year but we also began three new initiatives; New Member Orientations, The Ambassador Program and gsLEAD. For good measure we also threw in a Board Retreat, gsSCENE Member Survey and just launched our Happy Hour Summer Concert Series in conjunction with Market Common.
It has truly been my honor to serve on the gsSCENE Steering Committee since inception and the upcoming year will be bitter sweet as I finish my last term as Immediate Past Chair. I remember our very first meetings and intense discussions on the way we wanted to impact the Grand Strand. We wanted networking and socializing but we also wanted to make a difference with community service and educating our members. We wanted young professionals engaged in the area, therefore helping their business grow and keeping them employed and active members of the community. The schedule above certainly makes me feel we achieved our goals.
The new initiatives this year will have a great impact on gsSCENE. The Ambassador Program allows tenured gsSCENE members to reach out to new members and welcome them to socials and events. Hopefully that first meeting will take place at one of our quarterly New Member Orientations where new members learn what gsSCENE is all about and how to get involved. The Ambassadors wear special nametags so new members can easily identify our extroverted gsSCENE members and get to know others at events.
For me, the most exciting new initiative is gsLEAD. I am a huge proponent of serving non-profits in our area and making a difference in the Grand Strand community. gsLEAD is the first step in doing just that to prepare our members to sit responsibly on non-profit boards. It is a six month leadership development program in conjunction with the Waccamaw Community Foundation and Chapin Foundation for young professionals involved in gsSCENE. gsLEAD was created to advance future leaders through personal development, training and mentorship, thus giving them the tools to serve as the next generation of leaders.
I step down from my position as Chair and leave the membership in good hands with our incoming Chair , Jordan Watkins. Jordan is a graduate of Clemson University and is employed as Marketing Director and Vice President of Gilmore Entertainment. She is a graduate of Leadership Grand Strand and currently serves on the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. I wish her the very best in leading gsSCENE in its next phase of growth. We will also say goodbye to several Steering Committee Members whose terms are expiring. They include: Kevin Cox, Leslie Fryar, Charlie Morrow, John Sawyer, Dan Sine, and Jenifer Sweat. I truly appreciate their dedication and hard work to the gsSCENE program.
