Live, Local, Late-Breaking…
May 10, 2010
Our Sponsor Spotlight this month is on WMBF News. This local NBC station provides extensive local news, weather, and sports coverage for the Myrtle Beach-Florence-Lumberton area, reaching 8 counties. This first ever all-digital station in the country, launched programming right here in Myrtle Beach on 8-8-08 with the opening ceremonies of the Summer Olympics. WMBF really grabbed viewers’ attention with its extensive coverage of the Horry Co. wildfires last year, according to Ted Fortenberry, station general manager. The station, currently with 82 employees, has brought jobs to the area, and has used its fresh outlook to capture the area audience with new ideas and strong community involvement. If you use Facebook, you’ve probably come in contact with at least one of WMBF’s team members using this social media outlet to spread news, encourage viewer participation, and generate conversations regarding local issues. They also have mobile alerts and a twitter phone application. WMBF has covered several topics of concern to citizens, and continues to give the Myrtle Beach area residents the news they want to hear.
WMBF also strives to keep advertising costs for small businesses low and quite affordable. They host a very informative annual seminar at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center to show how they can tailor an advertising campaign for a business. I attended this seminar in February and found it to be quite educational – comparing different media options, and how to wisely spend your advertising dollars.
I want to thank Ted Fortenberry, the station’s GM and VP, and Kristin Hargis, Marketing Director, for having lunch with me and sharing some information about WMBF News, along with the station’s continued sponsorship and support for gsSCENE.
